Why Kingbird

We spent two decades building tech for the giants. Now we build it for Main Street.

Between us, Chris and AJ put in twenty years inside the tech industry: enterprise software, venture-backed startups, and the teams that ship the tools everyone else only reads about. We learned exactly how the good stuff gets built. We also learned who it gets built for.

Spoiler: it was almost never the small, owner-run business. So we left, and pointed everything we learned at the people the industry priced out.

The thing that kept bugging us

Every powerful tool we helped build came with the same fine print: enterprise pricing, enterprise contracts, an IT department required. The technology that could double a small operator's capacity was gated behind budgets only big companies have.

The family clinic, the two-truck HVAC shop, the corner restaurant, the solo law practice. They got the leftovers, a $40,000 quote, or a “call us for pricing” page that quietly meant “not for you.”

We got tired of building moats around technology that should have been a bridge.

So we switched sides

Then AI changed the math. The capabilities that used to need six figures and a team of engineers can now be built and run for a small business at a price that actually pencils out. A voice agent that answers every call. Dashboards that show you what is really happening. Ordering that keeps 100% of the sale. Tools the big chains paid fortunes for, now within reach of the shop down the street.

That is the whole reason Kingbird exists: to hand Main Street the same enterprise-grade software and AI the giants have hoarded. Built around how you actually run. Owned outright by you.

Same skills. Opposite mission. We left the part of the industry that prices people out, and aimed it at the people it left behind.

Who “we” is

Chris King

Founder & senior operator

Years building and shipping software across industries, from enterprise platforms to scrappy startups. Chris owns every Kingbird engagement from the first call to handoff: scoping, architecture, and the standard every build is held to before it reaches your repo. AI-native by default, and the named operator accountable for your project.

AJ Smith

Partner, scoping & commercial

A career on the business side of tech, where deals get made and budgets get set. AJ makes sure the scope and the price fit a real small-business reality, not an enterprise procurement cycle. Straight talk on what something costs and whether it is worth building at all.

What we believe

  • Small businesses deserve the same tools the giants hoard, not a watered-down version of them.
  • Technology should pay for itself, not become one more subscription tax on your P&L.
  • You should own what you pay for. Your code, your data, your accounts. Always.
  • A real person should answer when something breaks, and tell you the truth when a thing is not worth building.
  • The price should fit a Main Street budget, not an enterprise procurement cycle.

We don't just talk about it. We ship.

We run our own products on the same bench we sell from. Real apps, in production, built and operated in-house. The delivery muscle stays exercised on our own dime before it touches your business.

Let's give your business the unfair advantage.

Thirty minutes, no prep. Tell us what is eating your time or costing you customers. We will tell you whether AI can fix it, what it would cost, and whether it is even worth doing. If it is not, we will say so.
